High School Assessment (HSA)

According to the Maryland State Department of Education, all students are required to take and pass the Maryland High School Assessments as a graduation requirement. Students will take the Maryland High School Assessment for Algebra and Data Analysis when they take Algebra I. This could occur in grade 7, 8 or 9 depending on when the student takes the Algebra I course. Students will also be required to take other Maryland High School Assessments (Biology, Government, English, and Geometry) in high school.

There are prototypes of Maryland High School Assessments available to view online. These prototypes are actual problems that appeared on previous HSA's. Previewing these prototypes will give you an idea of the type of problems a student can expect when taking the HSA.

The Algebra and Data Analysis Assessment has 4 types of questions: Selected Response (multiple choice), Student Produced Response (grids), Brief Constructed Responses (BCR), and Extended Constructed Responses (ECR). The Office of Mathematics at Baltimore County Public Schools is helping to prepare you for this assessment by designing Benchmark Assessments that follow the same format. You will be very familiar with each type of problem by the time the HSA arrives.

Links to prototype questions are provided for each
Baltimore County Algebra I Unit listed on this website.
It is recommended that you use these links to review for each unit test
and to prepare yourself for the HSA.
