Homework to be completed before the next class:
- Read the syllabus and note any questions may you have.
- Purchase texts books and supplies.
- Find/purchase a three ring binder, plain 8.5 x 11 paper, and spray adhesive for your resource file.
- Organize resource file into Part I and Part II and sub-catagories
- Read handout : Logos from Letterforms - part of CGVC 101 packet and on the server
- Read: Illustrator VQSG Chapter 1
- Read: Design Workshop- Williams Chapter 6
- Collect good and bad logos for discussion next week
- Spray mount three examples of excellent business logos from products or magazines/newspapers, on the provided 8.5 x 11 sheet.Study the examples in Design Workshop Chapter 6: then glue your examples on one of the categories on the sheet

- Mount one example of a logo that you think is very poor on another sheet of plain white paper. In a short typed paragraph discuss what could be done to improve the poor example and draw a thumbnail sketch of the changes you would make. Mount the original logo, the paragraph, and your thumbnail sketch of the re-design on the same sheet

- Learn as much as you can about the industry/service that your company is in and, most important, their audience.
- Based upon your brainstorming session individually produce eight to ten sketched thumbnails using letterforms and/or simple symbols for a logo for your business. Note do these thumbnails in pencil or ink, not on the computer.
- Based upon your thumbnails locate resources for symbols and pictures as needed, photos, symbols, clip art, bring to class next week
- Xerox your sketched thumbnails - please turn in a copy next session
- Reread logo tutorial and scanning handouts
- Read: Design Workshop- Williams Chapter 6, and pp 240-245, 266

Finalize and put a copy of your branding strategy in the To Be Graded, Branding folder by the end of today's class period. Include three possible taglines for consideration. This should be a Microsoft Word file titled brandSmith (substitute your last name for Smith, of course)
Logo workshop: Produce computer two roughs based on two of your thumbnails
Homework to be completed before the next class:
- Read: DW Williams 15-70, 103 - 120, 276 -277.
- Mount three excellent and one poor example of business cards and letterhead.In a short paragraph discuss, using the terminology learned in Williams, the main problem.Discuss what could be done to improve the poor example. Provide a thumbnail of the changes you would make.
- Read: Illustrator 9 VQSG Chapter 4, 5, 6
- Complete two logo roughs on the computer based upon your two best thumbnail ideas

- think about a tag-line/slogan for the company based upon the branding strategy and jot down three ideas for the next class

Discussion of resource examples of Forms due on the cork boardClass Critique: Final Logo - place copy in the "To Be Graded" Logo folder prior to the critique. Be prepared to read your final branding statement and three possible tag lines to the class and to explain how the logo communicates the values of your company. Show your logo in three sizes: small approximately 1/2 inch, 2 inches and 4 inches
