ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I

OBJECTIVES

Unit X - SPECIAL SENSES

Vision

  1. Describe the location and functions of visual receptors (photoreceptors).
  2. Trace the visual pathway to the cerebral cortex.
  3. Describe the visual fields and visual fields abnormalities.
  4. Differentiate between the functions of the primary visual area and visual association areas.
  5. Describe the structure of the eye.
  6. Describe visual abnormalities.

Hearing (Auditory)

  1. Describe the structure and location of hearing (auditory) receptors.
  2. Trace the auditory pathway from the ear to the cerebral cortex.
  3. Describe transmission of sound through the external, middle and internal ear.
  4. Define amplitude.
  5. Define frequency.
  6. Differentiate between the functions of the primary auditory and auditory association areas.

Equilibrium (Balance)

  1. Describe the structure and location of equilibrium receptors.
  2. Describe the pathway and destinations for the sense of equilibrium.

Taste (Gustation)

  1. Describe the structure and locations of taste receptors.
  2. Trace the pathways for taste.
  3. Describe the role of the limbic system in taste sensation.
  4. Describe the innervation of the tongue and mouth for senses other than taste (other types of receptors).

Smell (Olfaction)

  1. Describe the structure and location of smell receptors.
  2. Describe the pathway for smell.
  3. Explain the relationship between taste and smell.
  4. Describe the role of the limbic system in smell sensation.
