ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I
OBJECTIVES
Unit X - SPECIAL SENSES
Vision
- Describe the location and functions of visual receptors (photoreceptors).
- Trace the visual pathway to the cerebral cortex.
- Describe the visual fields and visual fields abnormalities.
- Differentiate between the functions of the primary visual area and visual
association areas.
- Describe the structure of the eye.
- Describe visual abnormalities.
Hearing (Auditory)
- Describe the structure and location of hearing (auditory) receptors.
- Trace the auditory pathway from the ear to the cerebral cortex.
- Describe transmission of sound through the external, middle and internal
ear.
- Define amplitude.
- Define frequency.
- Differentiate between the functions of the primary auditory and auditory
association areas.
Equilibrium (Balance)
- Describe the structure and location of equilibrium receptors.
- Describe the pathway and destinations for the sense of equilibrium.
Taste (Gustation)
- Describe the structure and locations of taste receptors.
- Trace the pathways for taste.
- Describe the role of the limbic system in taste sensation.
- Describe the innervation of the tongue and mouth for senses other than taste
(other types of receptors).
Smell (Olfaction)
- Describe the structure and location of smell receptors.
- Describe the pathway for smell.
- Explain the relationship between taste and smell.
- Describe the role of the limbic system in smell sensation.
