Kim W. Stallwood
While a student in 1973, Stallwood became a vegetarian after working in a chicken processing plant in England and went on to become a vegan in 1976. He helped direct Compassion in World Farming (1976-1978), British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (1978-1986), and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (1987-1992). In 1993 Stallwood became editor of The Animals Agenda and executive director of its nonprofit publisher, the Animal Rights Network. He also founded the ARN Collection, which became the world's largest library in animal rights. Currently, he is reestablishing ARN as the Institute for Animals and Society (IAS), the first think tank in the world devoted exclusively to advancing the moral and legal status of animals in public policy. The IAS collaborates with North Carolina State University on the Tom Regan Animal Rights Archive, which recently acquired the ARN Collection. The IAS also works with the Community College of Baltimore County (MD) on a premier training program in animal advocacy, which will consist of four three-credit classes co-taught by Stallwood. He edited two anthologies of Animals Agenda articles (Speaking Out for Animals and A Primer on Animal Rights) and The Animals' Agenda Directory of Organizations.
Brenda Stevens Fick
Fick has been a writing instructor at CCBC for more than ten years. About two years ago, she began to read about animal rights and to use the subject as a topic for her writing students. After helping organize a CCBC Dundalk Ethics Day devoted to animal rights in 2002 when Tom Regan delivered the keynote address, she joined with Kim Stallwood to develop courses for training animal advocates for work in the movement.
