Glossary

Icosahedra: polyhedron that has 20 faces, 30 edges and 12 vertices.
Nanometer: common measurement of viral particles. Also known as 1/1,000,000,000.
Serotypes: are groups of microorganisms or viruses that are categorized by antigens found on their cell surface.
Nasal Mucosa: derived from germ layers, lining covered by epithelial cells that mainly absorb and secrete. This mucous membrane is located in nasal passages.
Conjunctiva: a mucous membrane that covers the sclera. It helps lubricate the eye.
Rhinorrhea: common synonym for runny nose of abnormal discharge.
Malaise: generally feeling unwell or uncomfortable
Acute otitis media(AOM): inflammation of the inner ear with happens in a duct called Eustachian tube. That duct is located between the ear drum and inner ear.
Sinusitis: inflammation of the facial sinus cavities
Lower Respiratory Infections(LRIs): respiratory infections located mostly in the lungs, trachea, and brochii.
Acute nasopharyngitis: also known as acute coryza or common cold, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by some serotypes of Rhinoviruses.
Croup: respiratory diseases commonly found in infants and children.
Cystic fibrosis: hereditary disease that affects the mucus glands of the lungs along with other vital organs such as liver, pancreas and intestines.
