Depending on the type of organism, cells transfer energy and generate ATP by:

1. photophosphorylation,

2. substrate-level phosphorylation, and/or

3. oxidative phosphorylation.

(Phosphorylation (def) refers to the attachment of a phosphate group to a molecule.)
