Unit 1 Right Triangle Trigonometry |
Section 1--Definitions of the 6 Trigonometric Functions
| PURPOSE: |
To learn the basic vocabulary or terminology of trigonometry, and to learn to apply the definitions of the 6 trigonometric functions.
| LEARNING OBJECTIVES: |
Upon completion of this section you will be able to:
- Identify the quadrant in which an angle lies.
- Find coterminal angles of a given angle.
- Determine the values of the 6 trig functions for an acute angle in a right triangle given the lengths of 2 of the sides of the triangle.
- Determine the values of the 6 trig functions given a point on the terminal side of the angle.
- Apply the properties of similar triangles to determine the values of the other 5 trig functions given one of the trig functions, without finding the angle itself.
| LEARNING ACTIVITIES: |
Prior to the class period or chat session on this topic, you must complete the following reading assignment(s) and PASS the associated quiz. All assignments come from your text, Applied College Algebra and Trigonometry, unless the workbook (wkbk) is specified.
- If the material is familiar to you, I would suggest simply reading the text and attempting the quiz. You will have 3 attempts to pass the quiz, so if you don't pass after this first attempt, then go back and work exercises on the material you got wrong.
- If the material is NOT familiar to you, then work out as many of the suggested exercises as necessary to become familiar with it. I suggest working only the odd-numbered problems to start with because the answers to those problems are in the back of your text.
