Interactive learning objects are used to help students learn better using interactive learning objects to teach and reinforce concepts typically presented in text form. A learning object, or a set of learning objects, can provide instructors with building blocks to create course content and activities in unique ways to fit teacher styles and student needs. The session demonstrates how a customized learning object can enhance student learning.

The Online Learning Kit provides lessons and activities that help learners develop skills for taking online courses. By combining philosophy, psychology, and educational practices, the Online Learning Kit provides multimodal, auditory, visual and kinesthetic approaches to meet the needs of adult learners and first time online students. This presentation will show the development of the Online Learning Kit as a tool to convert from traditional classroom setting to the online learning.

Archiving in the Digital Age: Will Your Digital Images Last? -- Deborah Wright, CCBC Catonsville (All) (J-202)

The speed of development and brand competition presents us with so many cameras, computers, printers, and papers that choosing the right product can be a headache. One of the concerns not often highlighted by the manufacturer is permanence of media. Many CD-R's and inkjet printers will work with a variety of systems and software, but not all will protect your data or images for 20-50 years. This presentation will explore basic digital file archive mediums, archival paper for digital photoprinting, and archival inks used in inkjet printers. Learn which printers, online services, and media are worth the extra money for longevity of imagery, and when to spend it or not.

This presentation will provide an overview of the best practices for evaluating what should be placed on the web, creating, editing and rewriting documents, understanding the difference between print and web writing, layout, chunk and reorganized data, writing styles, and the bite, snack and meal concept. Attendees will also learn about document styles and what does and does not work well on web sites. This presentation is designed for anyone who is a web editor or who writes content for the web.

Web and Distance Learning Accessibility -- Lori Markland and Michael Leone, Maryland Technology Assistance Program (All) (J-234)

Discuss barriers to information technology in education. Learn the legalities surrounding the accessibility in education issue with a focus on the Federal laws, including Section 508 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and state laws that incorporate accessibility. This presentation also addresses the means for incorporating accessibility into education policy and practices, and will convey technical resources available to institutions looking for more information on why and how to incorporate accessibility in education policy and practice.

The goal is to share a common instructional problem, discuss and demonstrate how to solve it. It is difficult to sort, read and file papers that don't have correct pagination and electronic file labels. Faxes and printers get jammed and papers fall on the floor. Electronic files have the name titles. Help! This demo/tutorial helps students learn how to put their names on their papers/files.

Academic Advisement in an Online Environment: The CCBC Experience -- Bob Baer, CCBC Catonsville, Patricia Hall, CCBC Essex, and Judy Walsh, CCBC Dundalk (All) (J-234)

Students of today look to the web to provide services in an easily accessible format. The Virtual Advising Center at CCBC, a collaborative effort of credit and non-credit personnel, combines a clearinghouse approach to information dissemination with the ability to have questions answered by a Cyber Advisor. This presentation will discuss the importance of providing online advising, the process to create the system, and its innovative features.

Learn how to use TechSmith’s SnagIt to enhance our classroom materials (handouts, tests, presentations, Web pages) with images and video captured from the screen. Participants will get hands-on experience using SnagIt to capture images and video and insert them into Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and Web pages. Participants will receive a trial copy of SnagIt to take home.

Creating Web Pages Using Dreamweaver -- Penny Fanzone and Nancy Bogage, CCBC Essex (Intermediate) (J-201)

Learn how to create web pages using Dreamweaver. Handout provided with instructions for formatting a page, adding images and tables, setting up a web site linking to other web pages and web sites, and adding rollovers, tool tips, and hot spots. As the number of textbooks, supplemental course materials, and software for computer illustration continues to bloat, the fundamental application tools and the design skills that students need to have stay the same. So why have your students sift through mounds of materials when you can teach everything they need to know from one simple to understand file? During this workshop, we'll use Adobe Illustrator and a single project file to explore the hands-on answer.

Building Cascading Pull Down Menus with Macromedia’s Fireworks -- David Sausser, Towson University CAIT Graduate Student (All) (J-201)

Fireworks allows you to create Cascading Pull Down Menus in a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) environment with no need to understand the JavaScript code that enables the menus. With Fireworks the menus created are viable in all major browsers, which may not be the case when creating these with JavaScript. Get a quick tour of Fireworks and then begin to build the menu. Pages to be used as links will already be created for use.

Using Camtasia to Produce Web-Ready Video -- Ric Pavese, CCBC Essex (Intermediate) (J-228)

We will use Camtasia to record all dynamic activity on your PC screen, including mouse movement, text entry, scrolling windows, animation and video, Pop-up windows, etc. We will edit our video to remove unwanted portions, split or video into two or more pieces and add special effects to smoothly transition from one clip to another in our video. Finally, we will take our product and make it web-ready.

This session is a make-it & take-it adventure in Macromedia Flash. Learners build a Shockwave movie to use in classroom presentations and/or on a Web site that they can take it away on a diskette. Handouts and sample animations are distributed to participants.

Grace Hopper Scholars Program for Women in Computer Science -- Barbara Leitherer and Project Team, CCBC Essex

This program is designed to prepare women for success in required mathematics courses, build their confidence, create awareness of careers in computer science, and emphasize the impact women can make in this vital field. By offering solutions to acknowledged barriers, the focus is to demonstrate whether the key to attracting more women to the field of computer science lies in support for rigorous mathematics training, multiple applied learning opportunities, or female role models and mentors.

The Community College of Baltimore County's Role in Information Security Education -- Casey O'Brien, CCBC Essex

The CCBC Network Security Certificate program is a four-course sequence designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to create a comprehensive incident-response plan, analyze security vulnerabilities, and implement the equipment, policies and procedures that protect a network and its related resources from unauthorized intrusion, information damage, or theft. Behaving ethically, writing policies and procedures, securing operating systems, installing and administering contemporary intrusion detection systems and firewalls, implementing network defenses and countermeasures, responding to intrusions, and utilizing system-wide, multi-layered, compliance-based approaches are emphasized.

CSEM Scholarships - Who Receives Them? -- Sylvia Sorkin, CCBC Essex

Over a period of two and a half years, 73 students at CCBC and 6 students at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland received NSF-funded Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships, generally for $3,125 a year. Come see the award criteria, graduation and transfer rates, and major programs for these students. Pick up a brochure for a new CSEM Scholarship program now pending funding.

IMMT's Simulation and Digital Entertainment Program -- Kathleen Harmeyer, CCBC Essex

At the special request of the game development industry in Hunt Valley, MD CCBC and Univeristy of Baltimore teamed up to design a new degree program for creating games for entertainment, advertising and learning. This session showcases student work, curriculum items and information about the rapidly growing computer game industry.
