Addition and Subtraction of Radicals

For each of the following questions, assume all variables are nonnegative real numbers.

1. Add 2sqrt(5) + 3sqrt(5).


 5*sqrt(5)

2. Add 5 (cube rt (6) + 2 cube root (6)).

3. Combine sqrt(20) - sqrt(40) + sqrt(80).

4. Combine sqrt(75) - sqrt(27) + sqrt(48).

 sqrt(96)

 4 * sqrt(6)

 6 * sqrt(3)



5. Combine sqrt(x^2y) + sqrt(x^4y^3).

 (x^2y + x) + (sqrt(y))
 (x^2y + x) + sqrt(y)

 Both of the above.


6. Simplify sqrt(5)/2 + 2/sqrt(5).


 9 * sqrt(5) / 10

  sqrt(5) + 2

7. Use your calculator to estimate sqrt(15).
