Quadratic Equations Part 1

line

For questions 1 - 4, solve each of the following equations.

1. Solve x2 = 121

 x = {-11, 11}

 x = 11

 x = 11i

2. Solve x2 = -169.

  x = {-13, 13}

  x = -13

  x = 13i

3. Solve x2 - 8x = - 45.

  x = {-9, -5}

  x = [8 +/- 2i sqrt(29)]/2

  x = 4 +/- i sqrt(29)

4. Solve x2 + 10x + 40 = 15.

 x = 5

 x = -5

 x = -1

For questions 5 - 8, determine the values of a and b such that the left side of the equation is a perfect square trinomial equal to the right side.

5. x2 + 14x +   a     =   (x +    b  )2

 a = 49,  b = 7

 a = -49,  b = -7

 a = 49,  b = -7

6. x2 - 12x +   a     =   (x -    b  )2

 a = 36, b = 6

 a = -36, b = -6

 a = 36, b = 6

7. x2 - x +   a     =   (x -    b  )2

 a = 4, b = 2

 a = 1/4, b =1/2

 No solution for either a or b.

8. x2 - 16x +   a     =   (x   +    b  )2

 a = 64, b = 8

 a = 64, b = -8

No solution for either a or b.
