Your study habits are the traits that can either make or destroy you in college. Good study habits start at the beginning, and develop over time. You get good grades because of your study habits. Taking notes, listening effectively, and avoiding procrastination are good tips to make sure you get through college successfully.
Taking good notes is essential for classroom success. When taking notes, keep them organized by putting the heading and date on the first page of notes and classwork. It's also a good idea to keep a separate notebook for each class. Learning to abbreviate will help speed the process. Be sure to copy everything the teacher puts on the board. Some of these materials will show up on a test. When the class is over, go through your notes again. Write down information that is still fresh from the lecture. Review your notes daily. That way, the information sticks in your long-term memory.. Comparing notes with a friend after class will also help keep the information in your brain.
Listening effectively is a hard skill to master, but once mastered, this skill is very helpful. Deciding what to listen for is a difficult task. Focus on the more important information like what the speaker is saying, and what the key points are. Assume that the information will be useful. Keep listening even if you become bored. Always stay awake. Keep your full attention focused on the speaker. Don't daydream or get distracted by the surroundings. Effective listening will be helpful to you in all of your classes, so use this skill well.
Procrastination is not good for your study habits. It will destroy your plans for what needs to get done. Avoid procrastination as much as possible. To avoid this problem, change your behavior. When a big project is assigned, break it down into small pieces. Set a goal for when that project is to be done. Big jobs will be much easier if done in sections.
Study habits are the key to college success. Use note taking, effective listening, and avoiding procrastination to help you in your studies. With these tips in mind, college will be a breeze.
