Course Goals

Students pursuing a career as a Medical Office Assistant need a foundation in the basics that govern the health care industry. This course will give students an introduction to the theory and principles of the health care delivery system, the health insurance industry and the medical practice. Areas of specialization are reviewed, and trends in the health care delivery system are discussed with emphasis on their impact on the Medical Office Assistant.Upon completion of this course, students should have the ability to:

  • Recog nize legal and ethical issues that arise in a medical office

  • Understand the scope of practice of various allied health professionals

  • Register patients and schedule appointments in a medical setting

  • Perform bookkeeping procedures

  • Differentiate various types of medical insurance

  • Process insurance claims

Final Exam 30%

Quiz 10%
Assignments 30%

Late assignments do not receive full creditAttendance is mandatory for proper learning experiences; therefore, excessive absenteeism is not tolerated. Students are responsible for making up missed assignments. CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS.

Final Grades:

A = 90 – 100%
B = 80 – 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60 – 69%
