- haustral churning - slow process in which distention of hastrum stimulates contraction which moves food into next haustrum
- mixes food residue and aids water reabsorption
- mass peristalsis - long, slow movements along length of large intestine force food toward rectum
- stimulated by gastrocolic reflexes
- defecation - parasympathetic reflex relaxation of smooth muscle sphincter; relaxation of external sphincter (skeletal muscle) is voluntary
