LESSON PLAN TITLE: Room arrangement
DEVELOPMENTAL MATH COURSE: 081, 082, 083
CONCEPT/TOPIC TO TEACH: Ratio/Proportion
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
a) C-2: Number sense, mental arithmetic, estimation
b) C-6: Visual representation of concepts
c) C-17: Problems related to the ordinary lives of students
GENERAL GOAL(S):
a) Teach students how to do a scale drawing
b) Teach students how to generate scaled templates using proportions
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
a) Have students figure out how many ways a room can be rearranged using a scale drawing and scaled furniture templates
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
a) Tape measure
b) Graph paper
STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURES:
a) Students identify a room at home they would like to rearrange
b) Students measure room, making sure to include size and location of doors and windows
c) Students measure dimensions of all furniture in the room
d) Students pick appropriate scale for drawing which is dependent on size of room and number of squares per inch on graph paper
e) Students set up ratios to generate scaled dimensions of all furniture
f) Students create scaled templates of all furniture from graph paper
g) Students rearrange furniture on scaled room drawing
h) Students document room arrangements
PLAN FOR INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
a) Instructor gives demonstration based on personal room measurements
b) Students do own calculations outside of class
ASSESSMENT BASED ON OBJECTIVES:
a) Count as two homework grades or one quiz grade
b) Instructor needs to check studentsŐ measurements and templates before students proceed with rearrangements
