About the Competition: The annual Catonsville Mathematics Competition was sponsored by the Mathematics department of the Catonsville campus of the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). The contest was held on the fourth week of April. The purpose of the contest was to assist the schools and community in recognizing the importance of mathematics in our lives. Specifically, the contest aspired to promote the ideals as outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 75th Anniversary Proclamation:

Mathematical literacy is essential for citizens to function effectively in society;
Mathematics is used everyday - both in the home and in the workplace;
The language and processes of mathematics are basic to all other disciplines;
Our expanding technology based society demands increased awareness and competence in mathematics; and
School curricula in mathematics provide the foundation for meeting the needs above.

This contest was open to all CCBC students, all high school students (junors and seniors only) and college and university students (who have completed less than 60 credits) in the central Maryland area. The participants were required to complete ten item multiple-choice test within a two hour time limit. Although the problems required some ingenuity and lateral thinking on the part of the student, they were based largely on high school mathematics.
